The fund wanted to utilise Friday afternoons when there is no Homework School to facilitate the Skills Programme. The fund identified two large gaps in the Curriculum of Government Junior Schools. Firstly, no computer skills are taught and the children have no access to computers at home, despite more and more assignments being set on computers. Secondly, there are no Arts and Crafts classes at school for the children allowing them to express themselves. So, this is where the Skills Programme started. We are a small Charity based in Richmond Upon Thames that finances a homework school for more than 200 primary school children in Guguletu Township, 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town. The purpose of the homework school is to provide extra tuition for pupils in junior school, aged 6 to 14, struggling in over large classes, a safe after school environment away from the violence of the streets, a hot meal for each child daily – often the only hot meal that they receive, and a caring community to assist the children in their early development helping them to make good progress through school and even enabling some of them to eventually go to university. A growing supply of computers and laptops for the children and the community which is rare in the Township. The children who move onto senior school are also welcomed to use the computers for their projects which benefits them hugely and inspires the younger children. Dr. Spiwo Xapile, a charismatic and far thinking man who was appalled by the effects of extreme poverty and of the Apartheid imposed “Bantu Education” that left under-educated parents ill equipped to help their children with their learning. He found volunteers to help the children with their literacy and numeracy skills, working from several converted shipping containers on an arid piece of land. Margaret returned to Richmond, UK, determined to help and formed the Rainbow Fund for South Africa Charity. This fund has enabled the school to flourish from 20 scholars to more than 200 and it continues to grow. The students come from a variety of local schools for assistance with their homework and learning development as well as other educational needs.
